Paul Costelloe "Hyde Park" Cocktail Suit

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

One of the most iconic images of Diana was her, drenched with rain, laughing with Luciano Pavarotti after his massive Hyde Park concert in July, 1991 (left). During the concert a huge thunderstorm rolled in, soaking the spectators - Charles had his raincoat, but Diana was seen huddled under a large sheet of plastic with Prime Minister John Major, which protected her Paul Costelloe cocktail suit - but not her hair!

The concert was organized to mark Pavarotti's 30th anniversary in opera, and also to benefit the Royal Parks Plant A Tree Appeal, of which Charles was patron. Diana, despite her critics dismissal of her as the airheaded "pop princess", loved opera, and was a fan of Pavarotti. She had attended his concerts before, and in the ensuing years would attend more, joining with him in various children's charity appeals.

A variation of this outfit can be seen here.

This outfit was by the Irish designer Paul Costelloe, and was another outfit she wore for years. Although the Pavarotti concert was the most famous appearance, she had worn the outfit since 1989. It had two options - with the glittered lace skirt as here, also worn in October 1990 to a charity gala at the London Palladium for the International Spinal Trust (of which she was parton), and the following month to the ropening of her ancestral home, Spencer House, following dramatic restorations. With the tuxedo pants, she went to a Neil Diamond concert in November of 1989 in aid of the Royal School for the Blind (again, she was patron), and to a Phil Collins' Princes' Trust concert in April 1990.(right) As late as 1992 she was still wearing it, in March to a gala evening in aid of the Benesh Institute, of which she was Patron. She also wore the jacket for a formal portrait. (below)

The jacket and pants were her in wardrobe at Kensington Palace when she died, and traveled with the Diana, A Celebration (Althorp) exhibit until 2014.

This recreation for the Franklin Mint vinyl People’s Princess Doll includes three major pieces - jacket, skirt, and pants - and two handbags. The jacket is in dark navy linen with navy satin collar and lapels, and features diamante buttons on the front and cuffs. It is fully lined in white, and closes at the front with snaps. The skirt is navy lace over the navy linen, and is trimmed with diamantes, as was the original (extra diamantes will be included). It is also lined in white, closes with a snap, and has hangar loops. The navy linen pants have the navy satin tuxedo stripe at the side, are fully lined in white to prevent staining, and open at the bottom to accept the stand. Will include two clutch handbags, one in black satin and one in navy. Shown with the earrings from the Franklin Mint Casual Khaki outfit and the shoes from the Princess of Glamour doll.
