Pink Portrait Gown

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

Suitably regal photographs of the Prince and Princess of Wales, taken by Lord Snowden for release just before their tour of Italy in the spring of 1985. Charles is resplendent in a burgundy velvet dinner jacket, but Diana holds her own in the Queen Mary tiara and a complementary pink evening gown full of 80's touches - big sleeves, big skirt, and bows.

The photographer understood the theatrical nature of official royal photographs, and in fact used a theatrical set designer to create the background. It's also likely this gown is likewise a prop. Diana was never seen wearing it publicly, and the photo session included images of her wearing the same gown but in ivory (below). It's believed the gowns were not actually Diana's, but provided specifically for the photographs, probably through Vogue magazine who had in the past scouted out clothing for Snowden portrait sessions.

This recreation for the Franklin Mint vinyl People’s Princess Doll is in a pink satin taffeta, the bodice fully lined in white. It features the big sleeves, sleeve bows, and back bow of the original. It closes in the back with snaps. There is an attached petticoat of tulle and organdy. Shown with the Franklin Mint's version of the Queen Mary tiara and earrings from the Inspecting the Guard outfit. Shoes by S 'n E.
