Pastel Plaid Suit

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

There were no rules for the separated wife of a Prince of Wales, so after her separation, Diana had to make her own way. Part of this, she hoped, was to establish herself with a serious image as a voice and representative for the charities she maintained - or, as Andrew Morton said in his book "Diana, Her New Life", "For years she had been celebrated simply for being. Now she wanted to be judged for doing." (page 99) One step was to work with a professional voice coach, Peter Settelen, to improve her public speeches. Another facet was her wardrobe, in which the professional woman's suit had begun to play a bigger part. One such suit was this Chanel one in pastel plaid, worn in August of 1992 on a visit Newcastle(left) on behalf of several of her charities (including RELATE and Bernardo's), and later in May of 1993 (right)on a visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital, of which she was patron.

It was tailored and businesslike, but still in a bright fun plaid (and with brightly colored shoes!) that would amuse the children of those charities. This was more important to her than winning fashion plaudits, which this suit definitely did not - it was among Hello! magazines 'Least Favorite Outfits' for Diana for 1993.
