Versace Lavender Belted Suit

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

Diana first met Gianni Versace during the Wales' state visit to Italy in 1985. The designer dreamed of dressing her but believed she could only wear British designers. Apart from a dress for a photo shoot here and an occasional suit there, nothing ensued. After the separation and divorce, though, things changed.According to one story he had one of his London franchises send her one of everything, or it could have been their mutual friend, ELton John. In any case, Diana and Versace connected, became friends, and he would dress her until his death in 1997. This lavender belted suit appears to be a compilation of elements of various suits from his Fall 1995 ready to wear collection Conservative Chic. (His sister Donatella would later say the collection was dedicated to Diana, but contemporary reviews of it don't mention any Diana connection, so it's hard to be sure.) It was a classic example of the 90's professional working woman's uniform.. Diana wore it twice in 1997 - once in May as patron of the English National Ballet to promote their upcoming production of 'Sawn Lake(left and below), and a monthe later to Washington D.C. on a visit to promote her land mine crusade.(right)
