Catherine Walker Red Hussar Suit

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

Part of Catherine Walker's 1987 fall/winter collection contained several jackets in a military theme, including a red wool one with brass buttons and a high collar, inspired by an 18th century Hussar uniform. While the look was probably slightly too literally theatrical for most of Walker's clientel, it was perfect for an editorial shoot in a fashion magazine (British 'Vogue', November 1987) and, paired with a matching skirt, for a princess always in need of distinctive clothing that stood out in a crowd.

She first wore it in October 1987 for a visit to the Rouyal Ballet School. And with Diana's love of theme dressing for official appearances, it made the perfect outfit for military visits - with Charles (in full uniform) and the boys in July 1988 to the Royal Tournament and in her capacity as Honorary Air Commodore to RAF Wittering in 1989.(left)

Diana wore this suit several other times over the next three years - to an away day in Winchester in May of 1988, to engagements in Yorkshire in July of 1989 and leaving Hong Kong in November of that year after the Wales' tour (as was becoming common in their deteriorating marriage, the couple left for separate destinations)(right), and to Derbyshire in June of 1990.

This reproduction for the Franklin Mint Diana, the People's Princess doll is in a red Amaretto linen, fully lined in rose to prevent staining. The jacket features brass faux buttons on the front, collar, and cuffs. Both jacket and skirt fasten with snaps. Includes red clutch purse. Earrings are from the Franklin Mint People's Princess doll in the Light Blue Suit, and shoes are from the Franklin Mint Red Dress with Bow outfit by the Franklin Mint.
