Green Velvet Cocktail Dress

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

In March of 1995, Diana attended the opening of a retrospective exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery of photographer Richard Avedon's work, where she was spotted with a bandage on one knee (Left and right, and video here).) No reason was given, but it was assumed perhaps it was due to an injury while working out at the gym. She wore a green velvet cocktail dress, featuring a macrame-style knotted belt.

No designer was given for the dress, but it is believed to be from Catherine Walker. Her partner revealed decades later that when Walker made up design samples they were always in Diana's size, in case the Princess needed something in a hurry. As she was never seen in this dress again, it's reasonable to assume the outfit she may have originally intended to wear wouldn't work with the flat shoes her injury necessitated, so she borrowed one from the designer.

This recreation for the Franklin Mint People's Princess doll is in dark green silk velvet. (It is completely dark green, any variation in color is from the light reflecting off the nap of the velvet, which is completely normal.) (The source from which I got this turned out to be a dressmaker/costumer in Hollywood, who claimed this may be a leftover from a dress she made for a female rock star. What can I say ---) It's totally lined in white to prevent staining, and closes in the back with snaps. It also features a silk macrame belt. Also includes a dark green clutch bag. Shown with the earrings from the original People's Princess doll, necklace from the Purple Versace gown, and shoes and hose from the Princess of Glamour doll.
