Drill of the Month

.

The drill for this month is a shooting drill. Everyone wants to hit for three, but not everyone wants to work for it. It takes dedicated daily practice to shoot consistently. If you want to be the "Go To Girl", read on! Improving your shot starts from in close. Start about 8 or 9 feet in front of the basket. Use only your shooting hand on the shot, don't use the non-shooting hand for anything! Your goal from this spot is 20 makes in a row, using only one hand. This will develop the proper touch and feel of the shot. You should note the back spin on the ball. Release the ball from your fingertips, follow through by pointing at the basket and holding the follow through for at least one second after the shot.

After you make twenty in a row with one hand, stay at the same spot and add the nonshooting hand to your shot. The nonshooting hand is only there for balance. Think of all the rocket launches you've seen. There is a scaffolding that holds the rocket upright on the launchpad. As soon as the rocket lifts off, the scaffolding falls away. Your nonshhooting hand is the scaffolding. Use it to bring the ball into shooting position, and for balance while you aim. When you shoot, the shooting hand does it all, the non-shooting hand falls away. Now when you shoot for this part of the drill, alternate using one hand and then both hands. Every other shot is a one handed shot, the same as in the first part of the drill. Make twenty shots in a row. You should see that the non-shooting hand has nothing at all to do with your actual shot.

Next, alternate shots from your initial distance and one step farther back (about 1 foot farther). Use both hands on this part of the drill. Your goal is 20 makes in a row.

Finally, draw an arc on the court the same distance from the basket as your starting point. Take as many shots as you need to make 100 shots. Your goal is 80% or better on made shots (100 of 125 or better).

After you have completed the goals for all four steps, move the spot in front of the basket back about one foot and start again.

If you are serious and dedicated to improving your shot, this drill will do the job! Good Luck!!
