Casual Sleeveless Cabled Sweater Outfit

fits Franklin Mint Diana Portrait Doll

After her divorce, Diana's 'off duty' clothing had come full circle to her pre-engagement days, no famous designers, no requirements or protocol to consider, just styles that anyone could - and would - find available in shops. This one is typical, a sleeveless cabled turtleneck sweater, teamed with a matching basic straight skirt, basic flats, and a very serviceable tote bag. She was photographed in it (left)coming out of Nelson Shanks' studio in late August of 1994, where she had been posing for her famous portrait (right).

These sittings gave Shanks a rare glimpse into the paradoxes of Diana's personal life. She had no desire to be painted at Kensington Palace, seeing this as an opportunity to literally, as she told him "get out of here" ('Time International', April 22, 1996 Volume 147, No. 17). But that meant contending with the papparazzi, who not only had staked out the painter's studio (and got this photograph (left) but followed her when she, Shanks, and his wife would occasionally go out to dinner. One evening as they left a restaurant, one flung himself onto the hood of her car, taking pictures through the windshield, and only stopped when he slid off as the Princess of Wales drove away, leaning on the car horn. ('Philadelphia Magazine',January 1995).

The portrait hung over the staircase at Kensington Palace. As her butler Paul Burrell wrote, she “felt it rather vain to have such a huge image of herself as a centerpiece on the stairs – at least, she feared other would judge her as vain. I think, though, she was proud of it, even if she didn’t let on that she was to too many people. Instead, walking up the stairs with a friend or a visitor, she would ask what they thought of it and, before they had the chance to answer, add, ”It looks like I’m about to jump off a bridge, doesn’t it?” That was her way of dealing with self-consciousness.” (The Way We Were, page 27 – 28) It now hangs over the great staircase at Althorp..

(The portrait outfit is also avaialable here.)

The shell is made from a light beige textured polyester fabric that mimics cabling, with polyester ribbed bottom band and turtleneck.
