Great Lakes Exhibition Program
The Great Lakes Exposition was an event that was world class; comparable to the World's Fairs that were so popular at that time. The Expo was held on Cleveland's waterfront during the summer of 1936, on 125 acres of land, to celebrate Cleveland's Centennial anniversary of the incorporation of the city. The event was so successful that it was held over for a second summer in 1937 — that's when Billy Rose came to town!
Share some of the magic that made our waterfront the `place to be' during those two summers. Big name entertainers, athletes from the Olympics and dazzling displays from around the world made Cleveland the vacation destination for millions of Americans.

Lyle Gun: The Lyle gun is used for shooting a projectile to the beach or to
another vessel when saving lives during sea disasters, falling through the ice,
or stranded on a cliff.
Breeches Buoy: The Breeches buoy is a crude rope-based rescue device used
to extract people from wrecked vessels, or to transport people from one
location to another in situations of danger. The breeches buoy was usually
deployed from either ship to ship, or ship to shore using a lyle gun, and
allowed single person evacuations
